IPCC Update #12 - The wheels of SR Cities is in motion!

Hello from Working Group II! 👋🏼

Welcome to Update #12! With the conclusion of the author nominations for the 7th Assessment Report (AR7), our team is now knee deep in reading applications and preparing for the selections. This will take place in Geneva, where the Bureau will gather to discuss. In parallel, we are also working on the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (SRCities) and preparing for the Second Lead Author Meeting (LAM2) taking place in Kenya this July. On top of that, our team is also preparing to head to Bonn for SB62 in June. I know, talk about a hectic schedule but check out our key updates below!

Timeline for the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (SRCities)

📝 Contribute as an Expert Reviewer

With the conclusion of the First Lead Author Meeting (LAM1) in Osaka, our report's drafting process is in motion! The above timeline gives a snapshot on what you can expect from now to March 2027, when the report is published.

Urban researchers, practitioners expert communities should look out for the upcoming Expert Review that will take place in October 2025, where the First-Order Draft is open to review by experts.

This is a process where you'd have to (1) Sign up to be an Expert Reviewer, (2) Receive a copy of the First-Order Draft, (3) Submit your comments. Note that all review comments submitted by experts or governments will be addressed by the authors.

Broad participation in the IPCC review process is critical to ensure the scientific robustness of the report, and we would strongly recommend you and your peers to come forward to be a Reviewer when the call is up. You'll get the updates from this newsletter.

You can read more about it here What is an Expert Reviewer of IPCC reports?

📌 Note the deadlines for researchers publishing papers

The IPCC does not conduct its own research as its main role is to assess the scientific, technical and socio-economic literature relevant to understanding climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. Author teams thus critically assess all such information from any source that is to be included in the report.

Thus, cut-off dates are set which indicate by which time literature has to be accepted for publication by scientific journals, if it is to be included in the current assessment. These cut-off dates ensure the assessment is as up to date as is practical while ensuring that author teams have sufficient time to fully evaluate all literature included in the assessment.

The cut-off dates for literature to be included in the Special Report can be seen in the diagram above.
